Joomla: I'm not an expert. How to build a website with Jooma?

I use Dreamwaver, Photoshop and other tools. But I do not know anything about joomla. The information I found today is very techie and confusing for me. I have a new hosting service with fantastic and has great programs. How do I start? Is there a manual for human beings, not linux nerds? (I use Linux, Windows and Mac OSX, but I make room on the windows and then Hosting transfer to linux). This website is for our federation, with information for people about training, events, database technicians fitness, a forum, photo gallery. I was told that Joomla can make it easier for me. Please please help me.

Joomla can be difficult to get your head around what with all components, modules, mambots, etc. It allows rapid development of website and web applications. I can create a site Joomla (Feature only) in a couple of hours.
