The Internet offers endless opportunities for people around the world who decide to take advantage of it. If a person wants to shop around for different items or perform research for a paper or project, there are specific places for what a person needs. Because there are so many sites on the Internet and World Wide Web offers people who others want to scam the opportunity to be anonymous, it is especially important to be careful if you are only conducting research or purchase items online.

While the Internet has many advantages, there are also many drawbacks. The Web is full of information and people they want to do that information easily accessible to people around the world. However, you can not always trust the data you receive on the Internet. The popularity of blogs has skyrocketed in recent years. Blogs reach a large demographic of the population and provide the opportunity for the blogger to publish any information they choose too. Many blogs revolve around a particular topic and provide no verification of the information presented, so it's not a very credible resource. Due to the fact that many of these sites offer free blogs and other sites all that is needed to get a website is a credit card and basic Internet knowledge, any can publish information online.

Take for example Wikipedia. Wikipedia is a free online encyclopedia that provides information on anything and everything imagination. Whether you're researching a historical event or need more information on the latest world events, Wikipedia has all the information. However, just because it has a lot of information does not mean it's the most reliable source. With Wikipedia, anyone can edit articles and information. While the site editors every effort to ensure that they provide the most current and accurate, they can not check every article every day. This leaves open the possibility that a person can publish incorrect and misleading information to users searching for the facts.

Wikipedia is not the only site that may have misinformation. There are plenty of sites out there with people claiming to be experts, but no way to verify that the information effectively. There have been many cases of individuals claiming to be an expert in a particular subject, when in fact they are very knowledgeable on the subject. Simply put, there is no way of knowing with certainty who is behind the site under investigation.

While there are many sites out there that are inaccurate, there are sites out there that are very credible. A good way to pick a site is credible by their affiliations and credentials. Sites affiliated with an institute of higher education or non-accredited nonprofit often have credible information. These sites in particular are a good place to start when conducting research, however, should not be the only resource used. It may be easier and more comfortable to sit at your computer and browse the web, however, go to the library and research in books and other documents is the most reliable way to obtain information.
