The first person real crisis 'numbers' and come to the mathematics of orbital mechanics was Johannes Kepler. Note, I did not know "why" math worked, just "who" did. Later, Sir Isaac Newton's understanding of gravity paved the way for understanding why Kepler's laws worked.
