Vigorous writing is concise. A sentence should contain no unnecessary words, a paragraph no unnecessary sentences, for the same reason that a drawing should have no unnecessary lines and a machine no unnecessary parts. This does not require the writer that all his sentences short or avoid all detail and treat his subjects only in outline, but that every word I say. By William Strunk Jr. in Elements of Style.

Before you write an English sentence some decisions have to be made.

1. What is the single thought or total you are stating, describing, explaining or asking.

2. What kind of sentence best suits his thought: declarative, interrogative or exclamatory imperative.

3. Which of the six basic formats of English sentence construction best suits his sentence.

2. Direct object of the verb complement
3. Direct and indirect object verb Accessories
4. Predicate complement the verb
5. Predicate Adjective Verb Complement
6. Direct object and objective complement

For our example English writing of the sentence, begin with basic thinking.

Ross teaches.

This is a simple subject and verb sentence and states the core of my thinking. This core sentence subject and verb can be added, changed or improved. We can change the theme by Ross exchange for the noun, a pronoun him.

He teaches.

You can change the sentence to provide a more accurate expression of my thought by adding an article, adjective, demonstrative, possessive, or a combination of matter.

The greatest Ross teaches.
The blonde Ross teaches.

We can modify the sentence to provide a more accurate expression of my thought to change the tense.

Ross will teach. – Increase the "will" to create a future time
Ross has taught. – Add "is" to create a perfect time

We can modify the sentence to provide a more accurate expression of my thought by adding an adverb.

He teaches well.
Teaches background.

We can modify the sentence to provide a more accurate expression of my thought by adding a sentence.

Ross taught at school.
Ross teaches in Canada and the USA.

We can modify the sentence to provide an expression exactly my thought by adding a clause.

Ross was teaching when the rain started.
Ross was teaching when the playoff hockey began.

We can modify the sentence to provide a more accurate expression of my thought by adding an object.

Ross teaches students.
Ross teaches adults.

We can modify the sentence to provide a more accurate expression of my thought by adding adjectives to describe the object.

Ross teaches international students.
Ross teaches international business professionals.

We modify the sentence to provide a more accurate expression of my thought by adding phrases to describe the object.

Ross teaches students International Asia and Europe.
Ross teaches international business professionals from multi-national corporations.

We can modify the sentence to provide a more accurate expression of my thought by adding clauses to improve the object.

Ross teaches international students from Asia and Europe classes to book directly from their website.

The process of writing an English sentence is much easier when the writer begins with a thought base and systematically uses all the tools of writing in English to convey the complete thought.

An advanced level English is understanding of writing when you thought is actually two ideas that should be expressed separately. The following is an example:

(Wrong – Ross teaches international students to book lessons directly from your website in Canada, Asia and Europe.)

(better than two sentences) Ross teaches students International Asia and Europe, in Canada. Ross students booked classes directly from their website.
