Tools Catalogue

What kind of editing do I have to do to make my pictures look like the ones Urban Outfitters use in?

there catalogs? there so full of light and vintage. Do you know what kind of tools I should use? Does anyone know what camera the photogropher uses?

When you are looking at catalogs, the camera is the one thing that lends the least difference to the pictures. What you are looking at are the results of large flash units, umbrellas, soft boxes, etc.

In order to understand how professionals manipulate light to their advantage, you have to have a basic understanding of how light works. I highly recommend the book “Light: Science and Magic” to help you understand the basics of how to use light to your advantage. With these basics, you can even figure out how to come up with lower cost tools to get you the same basic look. The advantage of the pro tools over home-made tools are how well they are built and how consistently they perform.

Different photographers use different cameras, each lending to their own style. Some use the top of the line Nikon, some use the top of the line Canon, and still others use medium format film cameras. As soon as someone says that all pros moved to digital, a pro comes out and says that they still use film. The trick isn’t in the camera as much as it is in the lighting. However, it does help to have a camera that gives you full creative control (aperture, shutter speed, etc.).
