An increasing number of computers are sold with Open Office installed. Open Office is a complete suite of office programs produced by Sun Micro Systems. Its greatest advantage is that it free for downloading. It contains all the usual elements of a set of Office programs. Word processing, databases, spreadsheets, presentation.

My local computer store loads of Open Office in all systems they sell. This means that all systems are fully functioning suite of Office programs that can be used as soon as the computer is on.

There are big advantages to using Open Office. It is word processing software is designed similar to Microsoft Word 2003 or earlier. The toolbar has the same icons in the same order.

Open Office can read documents that were produced with Microsoft Office, therefore not be lost if someone sends a document produced in MS Office. Conversely, if a document in Open Office and sent to a user of MS, you can "Save As "and save the document in MS Office so that others can read it.

To produce a document that can be read by anyone, anywhere, Open Office has a built in PDF converter. You can export your document in pdf format and then anyone with the PDF reader software can read. The most common PDF reading software is Adobe Reader.

In recent months I've noticed several computers, especially laptops, sold with Linux operating system instead of Windows. Open Office works well with Linux. Both are free and this combination can half the cost of a laptop in full operation.

What if you are a computer beginner and have Open Office? You will find introductory courses that most are written for users of Microsoft Office. This is understandable as Microsoft Office has been dominant for many years and if you attend a course at a university or school, it is likely that teams will have to use MS Office loaded.

There is an alternative though. A computer course for beginners who are written especially for users of Open Office. It starts from the beginning and introduces you to the computer and mouse. It teaches you to use the keyboard and how to edit the text. This proves that what the icons in Open Office Writer do. Once you've mastered the mouse and learned the basic design and editing is passed to show how to produce a poster, how to handle the columns and how to use sources of Works. In short it teaches you the basics of word by pressing with Open Office Writer and then presents you some of the more advanced features. It is a complete course for beginners, but written specifically for Open Office users.

I am an IT teacher specialising in teaching beginners and mature learners. I aim to make computer learning fun and friendly. You can find my Open Office beginners’ course at Friendly Computer Training
