The stress oriented hydrogen induced cracking occurs in sour service installations. Sour is a workplace where there are significant levels of hydrogen sulphide, and these environments are common in oil and gas industry. boilers and pressure vessels used in steel service acid can corrode from the inside due to the accumulation of hydrogen sulphide. similar to hydrogen induced cracking (HIC), stress oriented hydrogen induced cracks is different due to the fact thata that the effects of the heat affected zone (HAZ) weld as this is the weak point in the pressure vessel or lack pipe. to detect corrosion in this area could cause the pipe of the vessel pressure to fail with potentially dangerous consequences.

It is therefore important that the steel obtained was tested for susceptibility to the effects of corrosion hydrogen sulfide in some way. Although a specific SOHIC test susceptibility have not been standardized in the industry to date, trials of ICH is available grades of steel for concrete used in this case.

The analysis procedure essentially involves assessing the strength of the vessel pressure boilers and piping steels to hydrogen induced cracking by absorbing hydrogen sulfide from aqueous corrosion. A steel sample without tension is exposed to a solution at room temperature and pressure. After a designated period, the sample is removed and evaluated. The results of this test determines the suitability of materials for the purpose intended. This will provide the client with confidence as to the time the material is likely to last before replacement necessary.

The steel grades of this type can be tested by the factory, by a UKAS approved testing agency or a specific test criteria can be provided by the customer.
