Why is my new hard drive Ext has some used space in it?

Ok, I'm a noob> _ <here is my question: I bought recently a brand new Maxtor Basics Portable Storage Device with 80GB capacity. Now I understand that most non-volatile storage media has some used space in them no indication of files or applications that use that space, but my question is why my new hard disk is worthless 6 GB of space free when it states that [each time you click Properties> the drive in My Computer] that their use is worthwhile only 65MB of disk space]? I tried to format the drive [click right format, not a quick format but] with partitions [Control Panel> Administrative Tools> Computer Management> Administration record], but still turned out that the two units [only did one partition] was 37.2 + GB of free space, making the total, yet, 74GB of 80GB. Can someone enlighten me Coz I think I'm missing something? BTW, the HDD file system is NTFS Ext.

do not worry this is normal, so that the unit work properly, you need to associate with any operating system you are using (windows, etc) you just say you have Windows at this time. Windows needs to put the necessary files to the hard disk to function properly. you can not delete these files or the hard drive not be tied to operating systems. this happens in each and every hard drive install Do not worry its normal.
