How do scientists study avalanches and try to predict when and where they might occur?

What are the different tools and techniques one can use?

Temperature and weather. If it snowed alot one day and it was 29 degrees out and the next morning it rained alot and its 42 degrees out then the layer of snow on top gets heavy and slides off the icy bottom layer of snow…
They usually look at how steep the drop of the slope is and how close it is to a road.
