stay at home moms….what do you do with your kids all day?

While i’m teaching my 10m/o to walk and talk i’m also teaching my 2y/o alphabet and numbers but they grow tired of this so we turn to play. Our options are limited. My husband takes the only car we have, there is no local park (we’re way out in the county) no sidewalk to our street, and since our yard is being leveled out and landscaped it’s unsafe to play out back what with power tools around and sawed down trees (insurance told us to cut the trees down – too close to power lines)
So i rock them on the teeter totter, colour, paint, do crafts, bake but some days they just want be left alone and play by themselves which is fine but i feel bad.
So how do your days go being at home your little one(s)?
Maybe you could give me some ideas of how to make things more exciting until the weekend when me and hubby can take them out proporly.

Be encouraged and know that your children are blessed to have their mother at home with them. It sounds like you’re doing a wonderful job. Keep up the good work:) Don’t feel bad about the children turning to play. At this age, this is how they learn best. They’ll have plenty of time for structured education later on, so let them do some exploratory learning through play now.

I’m a stay at home mom with a 4 month old and a 2 year old. To keep my toddler busy learning, I’ve set up inexpensive indoor learning stations for her. (So even if it rains, we still have plenty of indoor fun!) A few of her favorite stations are the Play dough station with a mini rolling pin and a variety of cookie cutters, a stamping station with large stamp pads and toddler friendly foam rubber stamps, a puzzle station with several puzzles I’ve purchased from yard sales and thrift stores, and a pouring station (large storage container filled with 20 pounds of rice and a variety of scoops and cups). I can play with her at the stations, but she often enjoys using the stations on her own as I sit nearby and tend to my youngest.

In addition, I’ve created a dress-up box. This includes a variety of hats, shirts, ties, dresses, and accessories. You can change the items inside the box, so there’s always something “new” to try on. Once dressed, make up stories for her to act out in costume or dress up like characters from the books you read together at home.

Another way we keep things interesting is to sometimes select a theme of the week and build our activities around the theme. Each day we complete a major activity on the theme. You can find some age appropriate theme and activities at www.enchantedlearning.com.

I also suggest following your child’s interests and needs as you seek to plan things for them. My little one’s newest interest is the moon, so we’re working that into our activities through stories, artwork, and music. Naps and educational television time are also important parts of our day as well.
