If you did not already know what Linux is essentially an operating system like Windows. There are slight differences in how things are set, but mostly the two OS's are the same. The only difference is in price, which Windows you have to pay hundreds of dollars, Linux is completely free and available for download the entire web.

Linux is built for the PC, but specific versions can be installed on your PS3 into something of a super-computer. Although you can install Ubuntu, Red Hat, Fedora and even Kubuntu the best distro to choose is Yellow Dog Linux. The reasoning is that Yellow Dog was directly commissioned by Sony to be built for the PS3.

Installing Yellow Dog Linux on your PS3 is actually quite simple. The first thing you want to quickly back up all files stored. Not that anything can go wrong, but just in case. On your PS3 go to "System Settings", then select the utility of "Format" option. A popup should ask if you wish to continue ahead and format the hard disk. Click "Yes option. When asked the size of the partitions, select" Custom "and then assign 10GB to a new partition.

Go ahead and insert the disk Yellow Dog ISO on PS3. If you have not already downloaded, just search the web and burn it to disc using something like Daemon Tools. In the PS3 menu, go to "System Configuration" again, then there should be an option to "Install Other operating system. "Obviously this is the option we want! Then the system looks for operating system images, and is our record.

It will then be guided through the process of installing the same when installing Linux or Windows on a standard PC. During this time, all drivers PS3 will not work so make sure you have a mouse connected to the USB port otherwise we will have to start all over again!

Make sure you enough time to really sit and watch reinstall your operating system. It can take an awful long time and during the installation can not play your PS3 at all. Even unplug a USB device or external hard drive will make the installation process fails and you have to start over.

Once the process is complete, PS3 should now have a dual boot. You can boot the PS3's standard operating system for playing games or installing your new yellow dog to use your PS3 a standard computer.
