why are my photoshop tools not working?

i just opened photoshop cs4 and started a new project. when i try using a any tool they aren’t working. i made sure the the tool was selected, the layer was unlocked but all i get is the the cursor in the shape of the hand. i was using photoshop earlier and it was working just fine. what am i doing wrong
oh and for that first person that answered. i didn’t pirate it you retard. i have the flippin adobe master collection. you’re just jealous

Try resetting your preferences. (These are PC instructions, I can’t remember how to do it on a Mac, but you could look in help)…

Quit Photoshop. Relaunch it and immediately hold down the alt + ctrl + shift keys until a dialog box opens that asks if you want to delete your preferences (or settings, or something). Hit okay. See if that fixes it.
