The University of Southern California has announced the introduction of an undergraduate program in game development. With the advent of sophisticated games such as MMO and the merging of commercial interests with virtual reality, it is possible that USC did this as an academic exercise rather than a place to park its football players.

Other major universities have similar programs, including Carnegie Mellon, Georgia Tech and Southern Methodist University. The video game industry broke the mark of seven billion dollars in annual revenue. More important from a scholarly point of view, perhaps, is the prospect of applying the theory games, analysis and capacity building for cultural or economic environments that are not strictly about the games. Major game producer Electronic Arts has helped to fund the program at USC, simply because of its focus on non-commercial applications.

It is a reasonable assumption that the skills and tools of analysis that could be developed in a video game liberal arts degree program will be increasingly applied in commercial applications online. The Internet has become a important commercial market, which functions more efficiently as the web sites used for trade increasingly sophisticated and, to some extent, have a high level of graphics.

With this in mind, the nuts and bolts of a video game education still have to do with the development of a complex piece software. Critical knowledge include digital animation, game design and game programming.

Programmer
A programmer can work on the game engine, artificial intelligence features, tools, hardware and network.

Designer
A designer – or artists – can be an animator, 3D artist / modeler or 2D artist / texture.

Level Designer
Although it sounds similar and uses some of the same skills as a designer, the level design is a work in itself. Level designers need to have some knowledge of art, but also must have good spatial awareness, organizational skills and the effects of rays of knowledge.

Writer
This is a growing position in the gaming community. It's just a manual for writing, history behind the game should be well developed and convincing. Each character speaks should have a script. The documentation is to be an important, though, as a part necessary for any creation software and games are no exception.

Behind these technical / creative roles are the production managers, game modeling experts and managers – both as a film.
