I am often asked how to use pivot points in the trading day. Indeed, it can be useful tools, but, by themselves, are not a system real trade or strategy. If you know how to calculate pivot points, however, may be a useful source of information.

The pivot points are the most commonly used to determine support and resistance levels, which are the prices at which trends tend to reverse direction. The level of support indicates that the price is likely found in "support" as it goes down and starts back again. The resistance level is the opposite: the price trend tends to stop rising and begin to fall.

When it comes to actually pivot points, most traders refer to the "5-point-system." This system uses the previous day high (H), low (B) and close (C), along with two support levels (S1 and S2) and two resistance levels (R1 and R2). The turning points are calculated as follows:

R2 = P + (H – L) = P + (R1 – S1)
R1 = P (x 2) – L
P = (H + L + C) / 3
S1 = P (x 2) – H S2 = P
– (H – L) = P – (R1 – S1)

If some time has passed since the formulas used, however, do not worry. I've never heard of any trader who uses only pivot points in their daily transactions. They should not be seen by them as a trading system because, in fact, you find the pivot points in many different places in a trend line. In other words, if the price falls below a support level, for example, you will be able to compute another turning point, or level of support below that. The pivot points are not absolute but are relative to the current position of Price. Consequently, most traders use in conjunction with other indicators, and some even use them as profit targets and stop loss levels.

Deciding whether or not to use pivot points depends entirely on your current business strategy. Experiment with them first. Plot the pivot points on the graph, and determine if they give any additional information. Can be used as a filter? Could you use to limit the stop loss? Will he stay out of losing trades and therefore increase the performance of your business? If the answer to either question is yes, then you must update your business plan and use them.
