mac os x graphics! what the hell?

i dont understand why apple brags about quartz 2d extreme and quartz extreme along with pearl. when they arent enabled by default in mac os x nor is thare a prefrence pane to enable them. you have to download secrets or some crazy debugger to turn them on. yes programs that require them will activate them but only for the duration of the app using them. performance gets so much better just by toggling two setting in the secrets panel i downloaded. im just trying to understand this. why would they be turned off by default when apple brags so much about these items rendering the gui. i jsut dont get it. sombody help me understand why they have these things turned off by defalt with no simple way to turn them on without developer tools.

the reason the card is not on by default is to enhance battery life, nothing sinister for most things its more than good enough.
