In Adobe Photoshop CS4, how do I just paint on top of a photo?
Probably a stupid question, but I’ve been poking around for a while and can’t figure it out. I’ve uploaded a picture I drew in black pen and scanned, and I want to colour it in using Photoshop. The problem is, as soon as I open the picture, it seems as though I can’t use any colour besides grey. The paintbrush tool will only give me shades of grey, even when I go to the colour-picker and select the one I want. When I select the colour I want to colour a path it just fills in with grey. In the colour menu, Greyscale slider has a check next to it and all of the other options (RGB Sliders, etc) aren’t clickable. I haven’t used the program before (obviously) so any help would be greatly appretiated (: Thanks!

Go to Image>Mode and select RGB. That will change the color mode for your image from Greyscale to RGB. This often happens with a scanned image; generally a pencil or black ink drawing will be scanned in Greyscale mode (it is possible the software for your scanner defaults to this with such images), so once opened in Photoshop, you will need to make that mode change.
From there, what you want to do is duplicate your layer, set the layer mode to Multiply (you can then merge those two layers), then create another layer and make sure that is moved to under your scanned image layer(s) to do the coloring, if you want the black lines to show. If not, you can just add a layer on top of the scanned image layer and paint on that layer.
