Photoshop CS4 3d troubleshooting?

I am having trouble using 3d in photoshop. I imported a 3d file (3ds) and am trying to use the paint tool. To paint directly onto the 3d image. Though everytime I try, it covers the whole image in paint, not just the area I have painted. Any suggestions?

Try placing the layer you’re painting on to layer type overlay.
